Miller & Associates partnered with Lincoln County to replace the historic Sutherland State Aid Bridge, a landmark transportation structure that served the community for more than 100 years. Originally constructed in 1915, the 795-foot concrete spandrel arch bridge was the longest of its type built in Nebraska and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its engineering significance.
As traffic volumes and design standards evolved, the single-lane bridge no longer met the transportation needs of Lincoln County. The replacement project was developed to improve public safety, increase capacity, and provide a reliable river crossing while honoring the legacy of one of Nebraska's most historically significant bridges.
Miller & Associates provided comprehensive engineering services beginning with topographic surveying, geotechnical investigations, hydraulic modeling, environmental permitting, and final bridge design. HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling was used to evaluate flood elevations and establish design criteria that minimized impacts to the North Platte River while satisfying regulatory requirements.
During construction, our team served as Lincoln County's engineering representative, providing construction engineering, construction administration, materials testing, construction observation, contractor coordination, utility coordination, and quality assurance. Additional responsibilities included review of shop drawings and pay applications, construction staking, SWPPP preparation, NPDES compliance, final inspections, and project closeout documentation.
Completed in 2024, the new bridge provides Lincoln County with a safe, durable river crossing designed to serve future generations while preserving the history of one of Nebraska's most notable State Aid Bridge projects.
